“Teeth whitening should be done by the dentist!”
Dark spots may occur on the tooth enamel for various reasons, and the white color of the tooth may deteriorate over time. Dt. Arzu Tekkeli, Clinical Coordinator at Oral and Dental Health Department of Anadolu Medical Center said, “Teeth whitening should be carried out professionally by dentists. However, there are methods that can be applied at home as well. Although this cosmetically applied method is considered safe, tooth sensitivity and mild gingival irritation may occur in hot and cold food consumption due to the abrasive effects of the substances used. For this reason, it is recommended that this procedure be performed by a dentist.”

Underlining that the whitening process is a safe practice when applied by a dentist, Dt. Arzu Tekkeli, Clinical Coordinator at Oral and Dental Health Department of Anadolu Medical Center said, “Teeth whitening results are seen about two days after whitening. Whitening sensitivity does not last more than a day or two, but in some cases it can last up to a month. When consuming hot and cold products, sensitivity occurs in the form of tingling in the teeth. Tooth sensitivity usually occurs during treatment and may last for several days.”

Tea, coffee and smoking cause yellowing of teeth
Stating that the whitening effects are temporary and can last from a few months to 3 years, Dt. Arzu Tekkeli said, “If a person prefers to whiten their teeth professionally, with proper care, the results can last up to a year or even longer. Regularly using dark-colored products such as coffee, tea or tobacco, and consuming multi-colored or acidic foods cause the teeth to turn yellow again in a shorter time. Teeth should be brushed and maintained regularly during the day. It is important to follow the dentist’s recommendations for the longest lasting result. Home whitening kits can be applied in the form of gel or paste. However, these products are not as long-term effective as dental practices.”

Teeth whitening should not be done during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Expressing that teeth whitening is suitable for most adults, Dt. Arzu Tekkeli said, “However, some special circumstances may restrict the security of this transaction. Pregnancy and breastfeeding, in particular, require the use of chemicals used for bleaching. People with sensitive teeth and gums and cracked teeth are not considered suitable for teeth whitening. At the same time, the bleaching process cannot whiten fillings and veneers. The suitability of the person for teeth whitening should be decided by the dentist.”
